Rape Culture

This page features two powerful photo stories. One shows what several victims of rape were wearing during their attack. The other shows women wearing almost nothing in public places to make the point that clothes are not consent.

Rape Culture

Rape culture is deeply threaded throughout our society. Check out the photo projects below to learn more about victim-shaming and rape culture.

WHAT WERE YOU WEARING

When victims of sexual assault reach out for support by sharing their stories they are often met with victim-shaming responses. A common question asked of them is "What were you wearing before/during the attack?"

This is a way to blame the victim for being assaulted in a horrific crime. Instead we should be asking why rapists rape. Not what the victim did to bring the crime upon themselves.

Not An Invitation

This project is the flip side of the What Were You Wearing Project. It is meant to raise awareness about how clothes are not consent. Sexual Assault survivors are often plagued with victim shaming questions like what were you wearing? How much did you have to drink? Why were you out alone?

No answers to these questions should make a victim responsible. People often find fault in the victim's actions prior to the assault instead of finding fault in the rapist for raping.
